In Maryland, education encompasses more than formal instruction in the classroom. Archives, libraries, museums, research centers, and institutes provide further sources of learning. Institutions, such as the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, offer educational lectures and workshops, open to the public, and work programs for college students.

In addition, annual book fairs and festivals provide access to literary resources and authors. Commonly sponsored by local associations and corporations, these festivals benefit educational institutions, and the community. One of the most notable is the Baltimore Book Festival, held each September at Mount Vernon Place in Baltimore.
