POVERTY RATES

The Poverty level is defined by the U.S. Census Bureau using thresholds that establish an average minimal-dollar value equal to an accepted standard of living. Those whose income falls below the appropriate threshold value are defined as living in poverty. These thresholds are used for every state in the union, which can lead to great disparity of experience for those "in poverty" due to the varying cost of living in each state.
