In June 2013, the Task Force to Study Temporary Disability Insurance Programs and the Process for Assisting Individuals with Disabilities at Local Departments of Social Services was authorized (Chapter 394, Acts of 2013).
The Task Force studied the range of benefits under State and federal law available to workers and those recently unemployed who become disabled due to a nonwork-related illness, injury, or cancer. Further, the Task Force compared what benefits are available in other states, including coverage, eligibility, cost, funding mechanisms, and related issues. The adequacy of application processes used by local departments of social services to assist persons disabled by nonwork-related illness or injury or those undergoing cancer treatments who apply for assistance also was to be examined by the Task Force. Finally, the Task Force made recommendations on the potential costs, benefits, and structure of a temporary disability insurance program in Maryland.
On January 1, 2014, the Task Force submitted its report to the Governor and General Assembly.
Authorization for the Task Force ended May 31, 2014.
